Hello,
My '06 disco was running fine then suddenly began running very badly . It won't idle belches black smoke from the tail pipe. I have a distinct odor of gas. My best guess is an fuel/air
intake problem maybe with a sensor. It almost acts as if its out of time.
The check engine light is on & outputting about 12 codes as I understand there is a central unit that processes the sensor outputs . Has this unit gone bad?What is it called?where is it located?Are there meathods of checking it?
Any help GREATLY appeciated!

it sounds like it's running super rich. Without interpreting the codes, my prime suspect would be a bad Mass Airflow sensor - it's housed on the air intake "pipe".
Are you using any kind of oiled air filter, like K&N? These could be bad for MAF sensors...

This may sound wierd, but if you live in an area where there are rats, and you keep your LR3 outside at night, you may have had a critter get in and work the wiring harness over. I had that happen about 2 years ago, and it cost me $400 to get repaired! Rare indeed, but true....

Gas odor may mean that one of the cylinders is not firing and gas mixture goes into exhaust. DO NOT drive it - you'll damage cats! See if one of the injectors is stuck open, or ignition coil went bad by checking the spark plugs. Since yours is '06, do you have warranty?

Don't guess, go straight to the dealer, it is under warranty and will be fix right.
