You never disconnect your battery to try and fix something, your ECU will loosew it's memory also as well as your remotes getting screwed up.
Look in your owners manual and follow the procedure for reprograming your remote first. Then try and start it, if it still won't turn over try jump starting to the battery.

OK thanks for your advice, "jump starting to the battery" is that just like if your battery went dead, or should I do something different?

I believe there is a process that you must do to get your remote to talk to your ECU, and thank God Rover only used this on a few Rangies like yours.
