My wife has a 2000 Discovery and the brake pedal is soft. When you first mash it, the pedal travels a little far, still stops but I'm a litlle concerned. If you pump it one time it holds good. Could the master cylinder be leaking through the bypass line?
Thanks for all the info in advance.

My 99 D2 has always been like this also.  I always assumed that it was just expansion of the rubber brake line sections.  I am very interested in what others have to say on this.

How many miles on your wifes truck, when was the last time you replaced all the brake fluid?

Replacing he rubber hoses and using the new stainless lines makes a nice difference along with a full brake flush. I did this about 4 years ago with my 99 with no issues since.

Mike,
It has 100,500 miles on it. We got it with about 90,000 on it. I haven't changed it so it's hard telling. Try changing it first?

Yes, go buy 2 qts. of brake fluid and do a complete flush. Then if you want more stopping power replace the lines.

And make sure there is absolutely no air left in the system lines anywhere.

I had the same problem in my 03 SE with 40,000 miles.  I replaced the fluid then bled the system twice.
