I keep reading about the alleged performance & MPG increase by removing the stock cooling fan and replacing it with a thermostatically controlled electric unit (Kenlow, etc). Has anyone here actually done this and what (if any) increases did you notice?

I actually did this 2 days ago. I replaced the viscous fan with two 14 inch electrics. I used a Hayden electronic fan controller I bought at Checkers. This little unit is awesome, as it is pre-wired for 2 fans, has it's own relay, it's own temp probe, and the engage temp setting is adjustable. The truck runs much quieter now, and the fans don't run all the time like the stock one did. As far as performance and mpg gains, the truck feels a tad faster, but we shall see over time about the mpg.

They are Hayden Rapid-Cool 14 inch fans. I had to trim the edges slightly to get them both to fit against the radiator, but you can't even see that when they're installed. I bought them at Checker (Shucks, Kragen) for around $60 each. I have the relay temp adjusted to just past the thermostat's cooling point, so the fans only turn on if the thermostat can't make it by itself. The "ignition" wire for the relay is connected to the hot wire on the brake master's sensor cap, so the "brake" light comes on in the dash when the fans are running. Kinda nice so I can see when they are on.

Nice touch -
I used a two speed Lincoln 16" 4500 cfm w/ two relays (30a ea) fused thru bat.
I pull it in (hi/lo) with dp/dt (center off) switch mounted under dash
I've only used low speed normally even if a/c is on
My viscous coupling was going so it runs smoother & seems to jump off idle a little quicker

Hayden is a good brand for fan and other parts. I had this problem with my
jeep fan clutch when I noticed a leak on it. Not sure why it became unsealed. So I replaced it.
