The driver's side electric window failed on my 2000 Freeelander xei. Upon investigation I discovered that one of the cables driven by the motor had snapped. Does anyone know if this can be fixed without changing the whole motor / cable assemblyand if so how?
Has anyone changed out the whole assembly before? Any info would be much appreciated.

The regulator assembly is just changed out in the the States. I would think it would be the same for you.

Replaced whole assembly today, which includes motor, cables, guides and window clamps. Informed by Land Rover that it comes as one. Fairly straight forward to fit and now back working ok
. However, it does seem a helluva waste replacing all this only because a new cable, similar to a bicycle brake cable, was required. Not to mention the fact that it cost me £90 from my local Land Rover Garage

Yes the only way to solve this problem is to change the whole assembly. That's how they get you. Crap car with crap parts. Good luck.

Same thing happened to me on both windows within 5 minutes--broken cables. My mechanic says this is very common on GM cars too. My bill was $650USD. Thank goodness my extended warranty covered it. True they did not actually cover the broken cable, but the cable and motor are part of the assembly. If you can get into the panel, I recommend shooting some lubricant onto the cable. My mechanic also says that you should operate the windows with some frequency to avoid seizing.

I don't know if it actually works but I have been told that you can just replace the "bicycle brake cable" alone if that's all that has snapped. I am looking into it myself as my passenger side window now has this problem. I can get a new one including attachment grommits for around £20.
