Does anyone know where I can find some sort of resource that will help me to identify an engine?

I've got a Defender with a V8 Petrol engine in it... I believe it is a 3.5L (but I suppose it could be a 3.9L). The vehicle had been pieced together from a number of others, and I do not know the source of the engine.

I have located the serial number on the block and I would like to know if there is some resource that I can referance which will tell me exactly which engine this is and when it was produced; so that I can be sure I'm referancing the correct shop manuals.

Thanks,
Punter

Best contact your Rover dealer or shop, I don't believe the engine serial number will tell you anything I know the VIN will tell you what the truck came with.
Wish I could be more help.

No problem!

The number on the left bank of the block will start out with 2 numbers and a letter. This is the engine code and will tell you engine size and application. Here is a quick list!

31D--3.5 litre
36D-- 3.9 litre Range Rover and Disco 1993-1995
38D-- 3.9 litre Range Rover 1989-1992
40D-- 4.2 litre Range Rover 1993-1995 LWB only
42D-- 4.0 litre P38 Range Rover 1995-1998
46D-- 4.6 litre P38 Range Rover 1995-1998
50D-- 4.0 litre Disco Series 1996-1999 manual and auto

I doubt you will need the Bosch numbers, but if you do.......
