Fault codes in repair manuals?

Just got a Haynes repair manual for my 96 Disco and it seems pretty thorough with the exception of listing fault codes and what may be the causes. All manuals for all cars i've owned in the past have listed these codes somewhere, but not the case here. Would a suitable OBD II reader tell me everything i need to know in this regard, or should i spend some extra cash and get my hands on the dealer manual?

P.S.  I emailed the Haynes UK guys about this and their response was to get a good FCR that will tell me the codes and the possible causes.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Do you have a check engine light on now? If so, what are the codes?

Thanks for the quick response Disco Mike. To answer your question, no the CEL is not on. I'm completely new to the world of Rovers and i just wanted to be prepared for future issues. Starting tomorrow on a head gasket job. Wish me luck.
Thanks again,

BTW, do you happen to know if the factory manual explains fault codes at all?

I don't think they do.

Thanks Mike. Any suggestions for Fault Code Readers?  Is there a particular brand/type  i should be looking for?

Nearly any of them work, the more expensive one give you more feature, that if you are mechanical and understand charts, would be worth buying.
Here is a link to an old fault code list. http://www.lrrforums.com/showthread.php?t=123&highlight=fault+codes
