I am thinking of purchasing a Land Rover. I am looking at the model year 1997-2000. Is there anything I need to know about these older ones that will influence my decision? And, How expensive is the maintence, generally? Thanks for your help.

land rovers have a tendancy for bad reliability, but both of ours are fine, what model are you looking for ?

Probably a Discovery. I ones I am finding for sale are 1999's and all seem to be in the 90K mile range. Is there something that goes wrong with the vehicles around that time, or just coincidence they are being sold around that time.
Does there seem to be a commen reliablity problem?
This is actually for my father. He is not computer literate, so I am winging it here....thanks.

i dont think the ones you are finding have problems, just it'll probably be a coincidence, 90K miles is quite alot like, we have a 2001 discovery and when we bought that it had around 44K on the clock
but i dont think theres a general problem, like i said, both of ours are fine. are the ones you are looking at from a land rover dealer ?

land rovers are not that bad, it is not like a normal truck though. ITS MEANT FOR FUN. Spend a few dollars look for leaks and especially suspension (STEERING BOX) no valley gasket leaks and no head gasket leaks also look at transfer case and cross seal leaks as well diff seal (just tell the tech):))
A land rover and a eskimo have a lot in common ::; always looking for a tight seal:)))
