i've been looking for a late model discovery for a while and i just came across a 2002 kalahari. i know these are a limited edition (i keep hearing only 250 in the states). is there any way (other than the paint and badging) to confirm that it's a real special edition. what i'm looking for is some sort of fender tag to something. it would be a lot of work to make a clone, but after unknowingly buying stolen wheels on eBay once i'm a little more careful now. thanks for your help.

either way, i'm going to get some sort of discovery in the next month or so. i may be back for suggestions on a mild lift kit.

Dc,

Not sure were you are from ? All States Special Vehicles have A badge rivited on the radiator support stating such. It's also pretty hard ( not imposible ) to clone one. Have to have VIN and proof of ownership to order SV parts in the States.

Another way would be to go to A local land Rover dealer with the VIN and miles and ask them to run A DDW on it. This will confirm all the details of the vehicle as well as last known owner. Also check Carfax.

If you get the vin and engine numbers you can check with a Land Rover dealer to see if those are correct for it been a special.

At the end of the day, your main concern is whether it is stolen or not, rather than whether it is a special vehicle. In the uk most people add bits to their vehicles all the time, thus making them unique anyway. It would seems also unlikely someone would go to the expense of making their landie to look like a special edition just to make more money as you should not be paying that much over the odds, i.e. in this case, the cost of a full re-spray of the vehicle. the only time this becomes viable is if the vehicle was bought as a scrap write off in which case this would show up in any checks you do. (here in the UK we have agencies like The AA, HPI etc that will provide a full history and finance check if you give them the vin number and current registration.) These checks would tell you how many owners, if it has been involved in an accident and been scrapped, the milage it has done etc etc.
