Is my transmission on its way out?

Have a 1999 Disco II with about 137K on it.  It goes into reverse and drive just fine and seems like it goes through gears just fine.  I don't notice anything in town, but when I get onto the highway it does not seem to get into the final overdrive until everything is up to temperature.  Once there it has no problems at all for the rest of the day unless I et it cool completely down.  I just bought this one a couple weeks ago after selling my series I.  Now I cannot even find the trans dipstick and the owners manual does not say where it is.  Any comments or recommendations?  Thanks.

When was the last time you serviced your tranny??

What are you talking about is not "final overdrive".  It is the" Lock-up feature" of the torque converter. My 2000 D2 always did this since new. The torque converter does not lock until the transmission fluid is up to operating temperature.
BTW, I like the D2 locking feature much better than the one on D1 model, which used to always lock exactly at 50 mph, regardless of the engine torque output.

You are right, I had a D I too and it locked at exactly 50.  Yes it is the lock up feature that I am talking about.  I just bought it so I don't know the last time it was serviced.  It just came out of a dealer service before I bought it but where is the Trans dipstick?  I still can't find it.

As stupid as it sounds, there is no way to check the fluid level from up top. Why??? you ask....I sure as heck don't know either.

You can thank BMW for that little offering to Rover during that short time they owned them.
Don't forget to change the tranny fluid.

Wonder if all BMWs are like that.  Anyways, is there a way to check it from the bottom?  What is the best way to change the fluid on these?  Where do I fill it from?  Thanks for all the help guys.

There is a drain and fill plug in the tranny pan. You can open the fill plug, if oil doesn't come out it is low.
