Is there any way around the dealer to get one? Also, can you get keys copied at a general retailer?

I don't know if you're still in the market but I got a keyless entry fob for my 95 on eBay. I took it to my local LR dealer and they programmed it free of charge.

A week later we found the original one under the front passenger seat.

Thanks and sorry for the long reply. I purchased one at the stealer. Charged 1/2 hr labor to program. Worked out to about 185 bones.

The instructions are something else....open hood, press latch button, turn on and off radio, turn car on/off, stand on head and then jump in a circle and bow three times toward Solihull....truely a bizzarre thing.

I will try and locate the directions and post them. I believe it takes two people to program one remote. There are some timing issues with some button pushing inside the car and under the hood.

It is a bizarre procedure. It is intended for the single button remote. It didn't work for me, but here goes..

The built in test procedure is accessed as follows:
1. Starting conditions: ignition off, doors unlocked,
bonnet [hood] switch depressed.
2. Carry out instructions 3 to 7 within 8 seconds.
3. Release bonnet [hood] switch.
4. Switch ignition ON.
5. Lock doors.
6. Switch ignition OFF.
7. Switch ignition ON.

If alarm is correctly accessed, horn will sound and
LED will flash. The following checks can be made:

8. Open and close any door or tailgate - LED will
light.
9. Depress bonnet [hood] switch - hazards will
flash.
10. Check engine cranking is disabled. Do not turn
off ignition.
11. Check ultrasonic by operating handset, LED will
emit one 5 second flash, and will flash if interior
is disturbed.

NOTE: If ECU is new born mode any
handset of the right frequency will work. If
not an initialised handset is required see
Handset Initialisation.

12. Turn OFF ignition or press handset to end test
procedure. Horn will sound as before to indicate
end of test mode.

OOPS! that was the bizarre test procedure. Here is the bizarre initialisation procedure:

HANDSET INITIALISATION
NOTE: New handsets are supplied in pairs.
If a new handset is required, it will require
initialisation to the ECU using the
following procedure:

1. Starting conditions: ignition off, doors unlocked,
bonnet switch depressed.
2. Carry out instructions 3. to 9. within 8 seconds.
3. Switch ignition ON.
4. Switch ignition OFF.
5. Lock doors.
6. Unlock doors.
7. Release bonnet switch.
8. Switch ignition ON.
9. Switch ignition OFF.

If alarm is correctly accessed, horn will sound and
LED will light. It is now possible to programme two
handsets of correct frequency to vehicle alarm ECU.
This must be carried out within two minutes.

10. Press and hold down button on first handset until
dash LED flashes.
11. Repeat instruction 10. for second handset.
12. The LED will extinguish if both handsets have
been initialised correctly.

Do you have to stand on your head while performing the procedure?

I have had rover keys cut at other places than a dealer. Mine got caught in a riding lawn mower. ( I had it in my back pocket and it fell out.) don't laugh. went to the hardware and they had the blank and cut the key. I think it may be a hit or miss thing. The reprogaming thing, well standing on your head is not in the instructions, but it might help and couldn't hurt. Gotta love a rover. duboff

Ace hardware cut my extra key, they even had the key blank with the rubber head on it. :)

I think I forgot to mention the animal sacrifice and the bit about a full moon. Word of advice--put plastic over the engine when you do the chicken. Otherwise you are likely to offend the ghost of Lucas with the moisture and have to deal with intermittent electrical faults.
