Hi
I just took my 01 Discovery in for inspection today. Two major issues, brakes need to be redone and also I have a leaky seal on the hub assembly. Two questions for you, #1 I had the dealer replace the rear rotors 14000 miles ago, now they need to be replaced, is that possible or were new ones never put on? Secondly, is it possible to replace the seal (Atlantic British said it was an o ring) or do I need a hub assembly as the dealer says?

You shouldn't need new rotors unless you generated some really harsh wera on the because of the hub.
On D2's you have to replace the hub, if it were a D1, you would just do a seal replacement.
Time to start looking around on the net for a hub and some brake pads.

One side is worn more than the other, the side with the leak being more worn. Thanks for the info there, I still think that they may not have been changed as I went into the dealer one other time to complain of brake noise and they were kind of dismissive of it. What is the reason the seal cannot be replaced? Thanks again for the advice. I will have more questions in the coming months, just got out of warranty so I think I am going to start doing a lot of preventative work myself

most new vehicles have sealed hubs (unit). That means presses and other such tools are required to get the hub apart, and again to put hub back together. It can be done, but chances are the hub will be damaged in the process. Personnally, I prefer the sealed hub, usually you can get around 80-100K miles before they need replacing, and I used to hate...hate packing bearings.
