I'm selling my 97 Talon AWD this week (most probably) and have been looking with unabashed lust at a vehicle I couldn't afford 7 years ago... A 97 Discovery I SD Auto (I don't want sunroofs) black w/beige interior and the optional leather and jump seats.
THing Is the last time I looked at a ROVER V8 it was under the bonnet of a MGB GT V8 and 10 years ago.
What are some simple things to visually inspect prior to and immediately after a test drive, and what are some things I should keep an Eye (or EAR) out for during the test drive.
I plan on (IF i like it enough or feel good about it) taking it to a classic british specialist friend for a compression test since I have heard how lovely they can be about blowing headgaskets... (I think ARP studs should have come stock).
Any other pointers?

Look at the hoses (power steering especially) and belts. Compression check a great idea. I gave my 97 Disco (gas) a preventitive head gasket/grind job at 90k. Look for rust around the alpine windows, and check the window rubber, especially around the rear window. Make sure electronics work as expected and cruise control. Lock the differential and check for smooth operation. Good luck.
