Got a check engine light with code P1179 - AMFR Correction at max negative value. I have a 98 Disco with 80K.
What am I dealing with here and where do I start (or does the shop start!)
Thanks
Rik

I would start with simple stuff first. Check the air filter for debris then pull the MAF. Clean the MAF and while you're at it, hit the T-body with some cleaner too. If that doesn't do it, move on to O2 Sensors and Fuel Filter. Others will chime in with other suggestions.

NEVER try to clean the MAF on a D2.

Even on a D1, don't clean the MAF just to be cleaning it, do it only as a last resort when you actually have MAF fault codes, including lean cylinder banks and either a 3rd. or 4th. gear out of ratio.
Check every spot for vaccum leaks for sure.

Cleaning the MAF on a D2 damages it?

**YUP** That is why K&N air filters are not recommended. The Bosch MAF's are too sensitive.

So what kind of Air Filter should be used?

Regular paper from the dealer. I use WIX filters. Another deal with K&N is that they let more air through...They have less surface area, so to me, more air, more dirt. Also, more air, more fuel. If you were dragging the car, and needed the extra HP, might be something. I had a K&N on mine and ditched it when I got on here 2 yrs ago. I noticed no difference, and have heard of people getting better mileage without it.

Just go to any auto parts store and buy a name brand filter. K&N filters just are not worth the money. It would take you forever to recup your money in MPG. And if you ruin your MAF then you will never recup your money.

Interestingly enough I have a K&N Air Filter I put in over Christmas.....So in addition to checking for vacuum leaks should I replace the filter with a regular one?
Thanks

Yes I learned the hard way with my K&N Airfilter, I get a P1178 error code on mine, working from cheapest to expensise which is Fuel filter, o2 sensors, then MAF
And on the o2 sensor there are 4 which i found range from 177 dollars to 55 dollars, the MAF is 700 + dollars if new, if you get a used/refurb you can spend 10 to 250
Hope this helps

Was it pre oiled, or did you do it yourself? A D1 MAF for the most part should be ok, they are nore durable (hence the $600 price tag)
I would swap it out with a paper one and see how it does.
