Got a 96 P38 Range Rover, 2.5DT BMW engine. The gear box keeps over heating, warning light keeps coming on?
This only happens when going up hill or towing our boat
Gearbox is full of ATF, fans are working?
Am i using the right ATF? or is there a special one for RR's.
thanks   ant

I get that warning light once in a great while, usually on a cold or wet morning right when I start the car up.  Other times on rainy days it will come on internmittently while driving.  I know it's not actually overheating, something to do with water around a connector I'm assuming.
In your case if it comes on while towing however, that might be an actual problem.  I'd make sure it is full of fluid, change it if necessary.

The temp sensors are known to fail causing bad readings and warning lights, also the wires can get shorted and the tranny cooler can be plugged up, restricting the flow. You might also check the radiator for blockage, if there is not enough ait going thru this will over eat the tranny.

fluid is full in tranny and just replaced with new ATF. still over heating.
this is also causing the engine temp to go up too.

If the engine temp is also rising, I would get it right to a sho with as little driving as possible, sounds like either your radiator air flow is blocked, the fans aren't working or something.
