Hello,
I just purchased a 2003 Land Rover Dicovery 2 and love it! Do I have to run premium fuel? Can I alternate between regular and premium? What if any consequences?
Thx Rick

You stand the chance of carboning up the engine, which on a Rover is a big No No.
I will run mid grad sometimes when can't get premimun but with mid grade, I loose 1 MPG with regular, it is even worse. Plus you will screw up your ECU's ability to give you the best performance.
For what you loose in mileage, that alone should be a good reason not to go cheap.

With the Gas grade does that go for older vehicles as well. I have a 96 Disco???

Yes, it holds for the older Rovers also, still the same old Buick engine.
You will get less mileage and have a higher amount of carbon build up on low octane.

We have 3 choices: 87,89,92, octane.
Can I use 89 all the time?

92 Octane or as high as you can get.
In the mile high city, Denver I think 89 is as is all you can get.

I agree, as high as you can get or pay the price down the road.

There is one model that's low-compression I don't remember which, that one doesn't need the premium. The high compression ones do. The Rave manual explains the differences. We can get 94 at the pump here :)

I thing all the Disco's NAS are the 9.35 to one.
I would love to have to have 94.

I don't get why 9.35:1 needs high-octane though, bikes run a lot higher than that on regular.
If you really want to drop your compression just add a shim under your heads when you next change the gasket, you can drop it but you'll lose power of course. Opening up the combustion chamber would also work. An any-fuel disco engine would rock.

Bump the timing up on the bike and you will need higher octane.
Its all timing.

Up until a couple of months ago, I could still get 93 octane here in beautiful downtown Colorado, now only 91.
As for bumping up the timing, that is not an option on any Disco less it is a 95 or older.
