pros and cons???

Hi Ive recently been looking into getting a discovery something under $7000. I was just trying to get some of the major pros and cons, years i should look out for, and any other helpful knowledge would be great. It seems my options fall between 95 and 2000.

I would if possible get a Disco 2. The Disco 1 is a great truck, but the series 2 is just that little bit better, especially on road, if fitted with ACE If you cant stretch to a Disco 2, get the latest 300 TDI you can find, (this is assuming that the TDi made it over there ?)

Pro's Great to drive, superb off road as well as on. Loads of space to carry stuff and people, relatively cheap to fix, easy to DIY on.....loads of spares / accessory dealers around. Air suspension useful for towing and provides good offroad ability and nice on road to......but can be troublesome as far as leaking air bags, but they are cheap and easy enough to replace.

Cons, rust like mad coz made of crap metal, Disco 2 is better again in this respect, but series ones can still be found in good condition, Check the chassis rails, Boot floor, rear crossmember for corrosion. Check window seals more on series 1 as they crack and add to the interior shower. If your not bothered about sunroofs, then get one without as thats another shower point on both D1 and D2

Get a Diesel if you can, i cannot offer much info on the V8's as Ive only just got one for off roading myself.

In the U.S. we can't get diesels. (CA)
 
Also not cheap to fix in the U.S.
 
The prices are down to buy one but has not changed the cost to fix one.
 
The Disco I is easier to work on if you do it yourself.
 
Try to find one that has records.
 
Go and see if you like a Disco I or a Disco II.

What are you planning on doing with a Disco, have you ever owned a 4 wheeler before?

I like the discovery 2 Im just not sure where to find a good price or where i could take a look at one close to home.  Now I have a little 92 toyota pickup 4x4 with a single cab. We are always camping or snow boarding so a 4x4 just makes life easier. Sadly my major reason for looking into suvs is my Rottweiler pup who is already 80 lbs and still a baby I love the space of the discovery. I noticed that most seat 5 but are the 7 seaters only certain years ?
 
A couple specific ?'s
   is the discovery 2 difficult to get worked on or work on yourself?
   about how long do they last mileage wise?(if well taken care of)
   How do they do traveling long distance?
 
 
  
  

They are expensive if you have someone do the work for you.
If you do it yourself they are surprisingly easy to work on.
The parts seem like they are hard to find. But if you spend a little time on the internet you can find any part you need.
If you take care of them you will have many years of a love affair with a truck.
Lastly they will do just as good as any vehicle long distance that has been taken care of.

Yes there is, well atleast in the UK anyway.....maybe the manual version never made the US either ??

If you're into it for your pup, be sure to check out how the seats fold forward and the window clearance.  It can be difficult for our German Shephard to enjoy the breeze on nice days (but then again he's 11 and his hips give him a lot of trouble).  Just something to consider for what it's worth.

I just purchased my 99 Disco II for 8K, during my search I found plenty in the 7-8 range, one sold for 6K with 103K miles on it so keep looking, especially on Craigs list. What you're looking at are 2nd or 3rd owners in most cases as most of these trucks were on 3 to 4 yr leases then returned and sold, gas is getting high, stealerships are expensive and owners are ready to sell, thats what I got form my search anyway.
