Shifter mechanicals

Hello you All! New Freelander fan here.

I'm going to try to do a swap of a 2003-type Freelander shifter to another car, and I was just wondering if, when you squeeze the button on the oem shifter knob, does the pushrod inside the shifter move up or down?

I guess nobody has ever serviced or had their Freelander's shifter out...
