2000 Disco II. tmep light is on, but it is the trans temp light. Vehicle seems to run fine and does not over heat. Any ideas on what the problem could be...

Vehicle wouldn't over heat due to the tranny light. Your tranny would. I would not drive it until it is checked by a competent person.
Blown tranny = serious cash.

my trans. temp light came on once when my wife was driving it, accidently had it in sport mode for the entire day. Let it cool and took it out of sport mode and have not had a problem since

Sport mode won't cause it to overheat, all that feature does is change the shift points based on your throttle pressure.

When does it come on, is it own when you first start up your truck or when, how is it shifting and when did you last check and service your tranny's fluids?

check the two small connections coming off the sensor on the drivers side of the transferbox (yes t-box) for corrosion and water this will cause the light to illumate. i have also replaced the transmission sensor in the cooler due to incorrect signal. so doin't think the worst first.
all the best

I agree, since you light comes on at start up it is not overheating, it is either a bad switch or a short.
Good luck,

There is a fill plug on the tranny. You have to use a lube pump to fill. It has to be checked warm and running. Should be a 2mm bead of fluid running out. The full write up is on here somewhere. Do a search...
