Any ideas as to the origins of a whining or hetrodyning sound between 30 and 50 MPH in a 2004 Freelander. Very apparent on drivers side but greatly diminished on passengers side. V6 engine and auto gear box. Sounds like vacuum cleaner. Good power. Wheel bearings? Driveshafts? Tranny? All suggestions appreciated.

You just said it yourself: bearing, tranny. Driveshafts would not make that sort of sound. I would start by checking oil level in gearbox... Could it not be a driving wind sound playing with something loose underneath ?

Could be the IRD, the bearings on these are known weak point on the transmission.
With regard to the noise, is it louder if you change direction as well, or just at that speed?
Does it make any difference what gear you are in?
Check also for any uneven tearwear on the rear wheels.

Just been reading of a similar problem that someone had to you, and in their case it turned out that the bracket holding the IRD to the car had come loose and was allowing it to vibrate around at the higher speeds. Worth having a look, as a simple check on the bolts could solve the problem
