I have a 1996 Discovery SE7 w/106,000 miles. Latest problem has been the engine ECU. I replaced the corroded one with a used one from a 1997 Disco and now runs like crap. Idles up to 2500 rpms in park/neutral and when in drive it's about to stall. Today driving at 45 mph heard rattling and was hesitating. Question: can you replace with ECUs from different years and possbily different countries (my used supplier gets most of his vehicles from the UK and I'm in the US) or could I have a bad relay now? My 1996 Discovery had NO idle problems before replacing the bad engine ECU. Why am I not allowed to post on the Tech thread??? Stacey

Different country, different year won't work. Check around on-line, there are plenty of places that will sell them. Mike

Thanks Mike, but I'm getting conflicting messages about the different year thing for the ECU. When you say it won't work, does that mean it won't start at all or that a different year ECU will display the symptoms by Discovery is having now (idle thing)? The supplier is telling me that it could be my relay is now bad???? (never was bad before). Thanks Satcey

Satcey, What was the original reason for ECU replacement? You can't swap ECU's without reprograming them or F'ing them out. You are clear to post to any thread except mods.

Hello, I replaced the engine ECU b/c mine was completely corroded, hence why my car would not start. I new it was correded back in Oct. and my mechanic cleaned the corrosion off and one of my copper connectors broke in half it was so bad....bascially since Oct. my car has been running off the new copper wire he stuck in there to replace the broken off one (this corrosion was only on 1 of the 3 plugs). I also replaced the corresponding female plug (spliced in a new plug). If you have to reprogram the ECU then why does my car run....would these symptoms I mentioned (idle issue) be occurring b/c the ECU was not reprogrammed? Thanks Stacey
