I have a 95 classic range rover and have just had the brake light warning come on in the dash console and then the brake pressure reduced by about 50% of normal. Would some know what might cause this problem.

First-- open the hood and check the fluid level. Second-- do you hear a whining noise coming from under the steering column/pedal area when you first start the vehicle? You should--- but only for about 10-15 seconds while the ABS system is pumping up pressure. If you do not ---or the pumping noise just continues on and on --then you have a ABS accumulator and/or Modulator that has failed.

Don't drive it without checking this out!!!!. You will be amazed at how poorly a vehicle this heavy will stop without the system assist.

Geoman,
Thank you for your reply, I started the vehicle and there was no noise in the location that you described. There was however a definite noise of some sort of pump that ran for about the approx time described and then released a short hiss of air once it stopped running but it has always made this noise. Could there be an electrical fault with a relay and if so where would the relay be locate to check this?

That "hiss" sound is your Air suspension pump. The sound I was asking you to listen for relates to the ABS pump. The fuse # in the main fuse block that serves the ABS pump is "30". There is also a relay, and a diode that sometimes fails. I believe the relay is in the engine compartment, but I don't recall where. The ABS electronic control unit is located under the drivers seat. Check the fuse first --- then check the connectors at the ABS ECU.

Again thank you for your reply, I checked the fuse bank at the rear under the drivers seat and all seems fine and the 30 amp fuse in the engine compartment, however i cant check the relays so i have arranged for an auto electrican to look at it from here. I would assume that if there is no power to the ABS pressure pump that it should be a diode or a relay as you say and not the pump motor or accumulator themselves? There are three relays located on the right side under the drivers, can you tell me if these are for the ABS?
