For £3k in the UK, if you can find a 300Tdi it will be an absolute shed.  Early 200's can be had in reasonable nick for that sort of money, but they'll still need a little TLC.

I bought a 1993 L plate 200Tdi (one of the last) for £3k in November of last year and I've spent about £1,200 on it since to bring it up to a decent standard - New front brakes (calipers, discs, hoses and pads), new rear crossmember, steering drop arm, replaced the damaged front spots and fitted a steering guard.

Have you had a defender before and do you know what you're looking for when buying one?  If not, then either do a LOT of research before you buy and check all the 'usual suspects' before buying or take along someone who knows what they're doing with a Land Rover.

Let me know if you need more pointers on what to look for,

Cheers,
