Hey all!! need some advice...my Def TD5 is noisy, sounds like a petrol motor when it needs tappet adjusting. Are the tappets on the TD5 motor adjustable? Could it possibly be that i need a new oil pump? Planned a 5 day weekend and have got just one day to get it sorted so any advice will be great.

Hi Pierre,

Yes the TD5 tappets are adjustable but I gather it's not the same as adjusting more traditional tappets.  It might sound obvious - but check your oil level carefully with the car at it's normal running temperature too, could be that. Tappetty sounds can also be a worn rocker shaft.

What makes you think it might be the oil pump?

Cheers,

Thanx Adz.

The oil pump might be worn, so if the oil pressure is low and the tappets are hydraulic it seems plausible that the tappets would be noisy at idle.
Gonna open her up tonite and see what she is on about...will post my findings.
