Welcome to the forum,

Now the sound you hear, can be from one of two places.. do you have air conditioning fitted, if so, when was it last serviced?

The other place might be from the heating system in general, in that you may either have an air lock which is in the heater matrix, (this is in behind the dash normally on the passengerside, on a UK spec version at least) or worse you are running low on water in your cooling system. (this maybe a worry as the K series has a known problem with a blown head gasket, though yours would be a bit early for it to have blown, but you never know)

Check water levels, if okay may be an airlock. Was the cooling system water replaced at the last service, if so they may not have bled the system properly.. you will find a screw on top of a fat pipe runing past the engine going to the rad. Another way to check, before starting the engine squeeze the fat pipe from the rad and watch what happens with the water in the tank. You sould see it bounce up and down..

If you need to bled the system I will lok up the proceedure in the manual I have for my Rover 25, as I have one with a K series petrol fitted.
