Whining or heterodyne sound in Freelander - 12/2/2004 5:41:16 PM    lenra   Posts: 1 Joined: 12/2/2004 Status: offline Any ideas as to the origins of a whining or hetrodyning sound between 30 and 50 MPH in a 2004 Freelander. Very apparent on drivers side but greatly diminished on passengers side. V6 engine and auto gear box. Sounds like vacuum cleaner. Good power. Wheel bearings? Driveshafts? Tranny? All suggestions appreciated. Post #: 1

Driveshafts would not make that sort of sound. I would start by checking oil level in gearbox... Could it not be a driving wind sound playing with something loose underneath ? With regard to the noise, is it louder if you change direction as well, or just at that speed? Does it make any difference what gear you are in? Check also for any uneven tearwear on the rear wheels.
