Defender Tire Choice?

joedef90 -> Defender Tire Choice? (5/15/2007 5:17:21 AM)

Anyone suggest a tire for my 95 Defender which is good for the street?  Using the truck mostly as a beach vehicle, not going crazy off road.  Any ideas?

Depends on how hard packed the beach is - in really soft sand you'll struggle with street tyres.  BFG All Terrains are pretty quiet on road and should handle the sand ok provided you don't try anything too extreme, not the cheapes tyres on the block though.  Don't know if you can get remould/retread tyres where you are - if you can get Colway AT's, they're the exact same tread pattern as BFG AT's but about half the price.

Cheers,

BFF AT's are always a safe way to go.

I agree, BFG At's are great tires.  The other brand that I would suggest may be a bit more expensive, but I had great luck with them. They are Pirelli Scorpions AT.  They are great on the road with almost zero noise.  They also worked well me on the beach in Daytona.

The Scorps I had on my 90 were great on road - really quiet, great while braking and didn't track ruts at all.  But they were completely pony (rhyming slang - "pony and trap" - you can work the rest out) off road.

If you find the BFG's too expensive you might want to try somy Toyo all terrains

My 110 has done 114,000kms on a set of Michellin LTX M+S.

For good sand performance (I live in a place surrounded by soft sand) you only need to do 1 thing: deflate to .5 - .6 bar. Forget about treads etc.

BFG's are poor performers in sand when new because of the thick tread face which prevents the contact area from going concave when deflated.

Rough tread patterns are totally useless in soft sand because they dig a hole at first wheelspin.

Worst tyres ever: Continental - 45,000km sidewall failures, Yokohama less than 40,000km
