I recently bought a 1996 range rover with 99k miles. Everything has been great until last Saturday. We drove it about 25 to 30 miles over the day. That night I started it and the auto.transmission would not engage at all. Nothing. Even when it is in Park (engine not running)it will roll as if in neutral. With the engine running you could move it back and forth with no noise, or anything. It is almost like the shifter is not hooked up at all.

I checked the fluid. ok. Up till now the transmission has been great. No slipping , no smells, no anything. Just wanted to ask before I put it ib the shop?

Hi Paul,

Sorry to hear of your troubles.. have you noticed any lack of speed recently? Or did it seem a little slower than normal.

It sounds a little like the clutch maybe gone, are you aware of the clutch having been replaced at anytime?

When you say it will not engage, does anything turn when you put it in gear and put some revs on, i.e. the prop shafts. if they turn and it does not move then a diff has gone.

Could also try puting the difflock on and see if you get any movement. If you do, then a diff problem, if you don't clutch or gear problem.

If it is gear or clutch, it means the gearbox needs to be dropped.

it has seemed a little slower than the usual. the prop shafts do turn when you give it the gas.

If the prop shafts turn, and at a reasonable speed, and you do not move, then a diff or half shaft has gone, as all the power is been sent to the one wheel that is no longer connected.
Give it a try with the diff lock engage, if it moves, then that is the answer, at least you would be able to drive it slowly to your local mechanic, unless you want to get in and have a go yourself.

Thanks for all the help. The prop does not turn when you give it the gas. I did find out that my 16 year old son (after running the battery down listening to the radio) tried to jump it. Everything was working great until then. This may be a stupid question but could he by any chance blown a fuse or something that would cause the transmission not to work? I know this is a longshot but when my son told me this I thought it I would at least ask.

This is where it is now out of my depth, not owning an autobox. If anything electrical is required by the box, then a blown fuse would be a likely cause. I will try and do some research and see if I can find anything. An easy place to look if you have it is the car manual, which normally tells you the fuses, or even look at the fuse board itself, inside the car, and there is normally another one in the engine bay.
