Hey guys, I've been routing around the web for rover forums for some time now. finally found this one. My father has a 1996 Disco, my grandfather has a freelander, and my uncle has an older rangie along with a 1962 Series IIa which we did a full ground up restoration on. Quite a rover family. I myself am getting into the market for a land rover now. Looking at a Disco b/c i can't yet afford a Defender. I know most of the differences between the 1st and 2nd series discovery's. Searched the best I could. I plan on moderately offroading, I like features on both, ETC and HDC on the II however i like the CDL on the I as well as the chrome swivel balls. Just a pros and cons list. On road comfort is not an issue, looking for durability and strength in moderate off road use. thanks guys.

The trick is just finding a good base vehicle, which has everything working and has been regular serviced.
One thing to be aware is that the 300TDI engine is known to have a head gasket problem if not serviced regular, and also a large batch of them had a timining belt problem, which required a replacement pulley. Land Rover did a recall on this, but some did slip through as they were not getting the services that they needed.
Some of the Disco 2's were fitted with the CDL as well, or it can be retro fitted if it has the right drive train.

my dad's 96 disco had valvetrain problems, infact the dealer even told him that it was a frequent problem in the 96's. Does the Disco I's have the same amount of wheel travel as the Disco II's
