I hope you will have an answer the the bumping noise in my 2001 1.8s Frelander.
We have replaced the two mounts on the drive shaft and around the diff but there is still a loud bumping noise at low speeds from 5mph to 15 mph then it goes away untill you go back down to these speeds it is comming from the middle of the car. Stumped us please advise

When my 2001 1.8 was making a knocking noise after changing gear i got a mechanic to look at it and he said it was just a loose bush.

The main candidates for thumping like this are the VCU mounts (especially a clunk from the middle of the car when changing gear) and the front/centre mount of the three on the rear diff (especially a thump from the rear of the car when taking sharp, slow corners or speed bumps).

Bothe are reasonably easy jobs for the amateur mechanic.

If you have these exchanged you need to investigate by getting under the car, grasping the propshaft and twisting it.  Is there wear in the UJs?  Give the propshaft a jolly god up-and-down and side-to-side?  Are the five bushes/mounts mentioned disintergrated or worn?  Some perishing of the rubber is ok, but poor quality bushes can fall apart.
