Greetings,

Here's my question.  I broke the front U-joint on my 1986 110 yesterday.  Now being the shade tree mechanic that I am I figured I could just take the front drive shaft off and go on my merry way.  But when I got in and put her in gear nothing happened.  Is there away I can get this moving without having the front shaft installed?  Last time this happened to me I was in a Chevy, but it was not a full time 4x4.  Any suggestions would be great.  Its along way to the Land Rover shop for parts :(  And would like to get it home without the help of a wrecker.
                                                                                Thanks,
                                                                                   David

If you've completely removed the front prop - then put it in difflock and it'll drive.  Don't use difflock if both props are attached, you'll knacker the transfer box.

Hey ADZ,  I tried to that but, it still didn't move.  I was wondering if the Diff needs to have some kind of resistance from both shafts to operate?

Put main box in first gear, transfer box in high ratio, lever across to the left to engage difflock and try to drive it.  If the car doesn't move, it's probably because the difflock isn't engaging - you can try rolling the car forwards by pushing it with it in gear - you'll need an assistant for that (or several more likely) as leaving the car in gear with no-one at the wheel is a great recipe for a runaway car.  Good luck.

Thanks Adz,  That worked!  Got the beast home and the new universal is installed.  One last question?  Is there a good rule of thumb for the frequency that yoiu need to lube the universals?   I usually do it every time I change the oil, but maybe I need to lube these more often.

                                                                               Thanks, David

At least every oil change - I regrease mine every time I use it off road and I change the swivel hub oil each time I use it for wading.

Cheers,

Usually that's good enough, assuming you don't go 10,000 miles between oil changes.
When greasing you should get grease coming out of all 4 seals, if not, not all the journals are getting grease.
