Greetings All,

This will be my first LR purchase. Besides, the major difference in size and mpg I'm not clear as to which of these vehicles to buy. Any advice or comments will be greatly apreciated. The Disco is a 2000 with 55,500 miles and the Freelander is a 2002 with 60,000. Carfax reports came clean on the Disco however, the Freelander has had 2 "minor" accidents. Lastly, the price we've negotiated is the same for both cars!! Talk about confused!

I am leaning toward the Freelander b/c we will be driving mainly in the city. However, an additional "trooper" is eminent and size will play a factor. Most importantly, how should maintenance cost play a role in my decision making, are they comparable? And lastly which one would you choose and why???

Thanks everyone!

is the freelander a 2.5 or a 3.0? is there a land rover dealership in your town? does the freelander have a balance of an extended factory warranty?

for an oil change on the freelander, a skid plate must be removed to get to the oil filter. i'm not sure on a disco

It's a 2.5! Warranty has expired and has been hit twice but looks brand new. It's hard to tell what the previous damages were. I'm 8 hrs away on my final decision. This has truly been a mental ping-pong (advantage DISCO). I'm considering buying an extended warranty for which ever i choose. Thanks for your comments. By the way I'm a Texan also (Dallas 12yrs,Houston 6yrs).

OOO hit twice? yeah that should be bolded. Make sure you check insurance, salvage titles are not easy to insure :) and also the prices will differ when the title isnt clean.

Even though you will be using it more for in town driving I would suggest you buy the Discovery, overall they have less problems then the Freelanders.

I own a 2000 Disco with 56K on the clock... maintenance hasn't been too much an issue; exception was that the vehicle wasn't serviced at 30,000 miles and the transfer case went out.  Luckily, the warranty covered it ($2700.00 repair).  Immediately serviced all other parts.  I also just purchased the front-drive upgrade kit (thanks Disco Mike!) and will have that installed in a month or so.

I take mine to a local mechanic I've used for years/multiple cars... never had major cost issues.  Anything that's specifically a "Land Rover" problem and I'd have to use the stealership, which is a costly option.

I think you'll be happy in the Disco, can't talk to the Freelander, but the space difference alone should make up your mind.

Good luck,
Bedouin
