Looking for ideas to improve your garage? Want to organize your garage?  Read on..... Growing up the garage was my Dad's domain.  It was a one and a half or two car detached garage with exposed studs, not alot of light and a workbench.  I believe stuff was organized but other than my Dad's tools, not religiously so.  I don't think it was even used to hold cars, only motorcycles, bicycles and junk. Fast forward to the 21st century.  Garage's are still typically the man's domain but the are much larger. They can usually hold three or more cars.  Now they are seen as extensions of the house and are clean, organized and all the junk is hidden.  As a designer of space I actually find garages a wonderful challenge.  I have some customer's who want a home for everything and all the items need to be measured and locations planned.   Other's are just looking for a beautiful look with shelving for storage: You can improve your garage yourself with stock or leftover cabinetry, hooks and some imagination or you can hire a professional and get a beautiful custom look that will accomplish what you need to accomplish. Some ideas for improving your garage:
  • LIGHT.  If you are going to spend any amount of time in the garage it will need some good light.  At the very least add task lighting where your workbench or garden bench will be.
  • THINK VERTICALLY. Even if you don't want to make the entire garage hidden storage, just by using strategically placed hooks and shelving you can gain storage on your walls.
  • THINK UP.  If your ceiling is high enough make use of that wasted space between the garage door and the ceiling using wonderful wire racks.  Some are built to hold up to 600 lbs.  Great for storing those Holiday decorations and other items you don't frequently use.
