ORIGINAL: andrewmcoffin Just catching up to this thread, and I found Bartell's post very helpful--didn't see it as contradicting Mike's but expanding upon it. Should I take from this discussion that Mobile 1 15W50 is the best easily available option for a Disco at this point and should satisfy the needs of the engine? Or am I not following this closely enough? Anything mechanical will fail if it is used, if it isint used it will rust and seize. Each of us must descide what we can do/afford to do for our trks. The guy using store brand oil may get just as many miles as somebody using full synthetic with extra additives. IT IS JUST A CAR. I use Mobil 1 15w50 because I like the heavier oils and I truly believe that thicker oils protect better. Not everybody can afford full synthetic motor oil. Due what you think is best and move on, life is way to short to fight over motor oil.

I'm definitely not fighting--but maybe you're referring to other posts above. Just trying to understand what will serve my truck best. I drove a Honda for years and didn't think twice about most maintanence issues. Hondas, generally speaking, just run. But while the Disco requires more care and understanding, I'm enjoying working through that process, and have a lot more fun with the truck. I'm willing to give it what it needs, within reason, to live a long and healthy life--or at least the best shot at a long and healthy life possible.

ORIGINAL: tee51397 Please don't take this the wrong way but I really don't see how the post either rebuffs the OPs statements, offers any evidence to the contrary or adds anything constructive regarding oil decisions for our rovers. Ouch, not nice, but thank you for your critique. You are right about my posting if you don't read it or have pre-decided not to believe it. I did not hope to prove anything to anyone..only help. What I indicated was the results of OUR research and that there are choices for each owner to make. 1. You can take a chance and use any oil, 2. you can rely on what oil companies tell you assuming they tell you anything meaningful and then follow that without testing, 3. you can add enough zddp to bring you up to the traditional levels. The only thing we can be sure of is that the last choice can cause no harm (70 year track record) and possibly (who knows) avoid damage. We have no long term track record on any other option I sincerely hope everything works out long term for you and others at the lower zddp levels. Let's give it few years and if your option group is still running fine withiout cam or lifter damage, my team can save 2 dollars an oil change. James My apologies if I offended you. It certainly was not my intent. I completely agree that zddp levels are lacking in modern oils, that is the entire point of this thread. My point is that one can end up doing more harm than good by simply focusing on one factor when making a decision regarding the choice of oil. There are other factors just as important as zddp and the goal should be to find the best balance overall. Also someone running an oil with .08 zddp with 3K change intervals could very well maintain a higher aggregate zddp level in their oil than someone running an oil with .12 and 7500K change intervals as zddp dissipates over time. Anyway, the following information is direct from API. There is no minimum ZDDP requirement unless otherwise noted. API ZDDP Specifications (maximim): SH 5W-30 0.12 (1200ppm) 10W-30 0.12 15W-40 No Requirement SJ, SL 0W-20 0.1 (1000ppm) 5W-20 0.1 5W-30 0.1 10W-30 0.1 All Others No Requirement SM ASTM D 4951 Max 0W-20 0.08 (800ppm) 5W-20 0.08 5W-30 0.08 10W-30 0.08 All Others No Requirement ASTM D 4951 Minimum of .06 for all grades ILSAC GF-4 Minimum Performance Standard for Passenger Car Engine Oils (Effective July 31, 2004) ASTM D 4951 0.08 (max)
