missing plug

looks like clutch housing has missing plug dirrectely on bottom question.does this plug
have to be in there .is there suposed to be any oil in this department if it is part of gearbox.not sure about this.the bus in question is a defender ute 96 model owened for nearly one day.would like it to last longer.if any one can answer problem much appreciated

I would suspect the missing plug you mention is the drain hole. This can be fitted with a wading plug, (needed if you plan to go wading through water) but you will need to remove the plug to allow any oil to drip out of it every now and then.

My defender has one fitted and I check mine every couple of thousand miles and normally don't get anything out of it.

If you plan to go wading, you will also need to make sure that you have raised breather pipes from the two axles, the gearbox and the transferbox.
