I talked to my friend in Kidderminster, England on Sunday.  He said the average price of gas is around $10.00 per gallon.

Yep - last time I was in France diesel was around €0.76 per litre with gas around €1.26 per litre - that's approximately $7.50 per US gallon for gas but only $4.50 or so for a gallon of diesel.

We're currently paying about 80% of the price of fuel direct to the government as tax - or put the correct way around there's a 185% tax on fuel in the UK.

The best bit about that?  VAT (sales tax in the US) is charged last... so the price breakdown works out like this:

Cost of fuel including profit of oil company:  £0.355
Fuel Duty £0.495
VAT £0.15

Total £1.00

The actual VAT on the 'value' of the fuel would be 6.2 pence per litre... but the crafty beggars have us paying value added tax on the fuel duty payable - so they're taxing us on the tax we're paying to the tune of another 8.8 pence every litre!  Every tank of fuel I buy I give the government in the region of £30 in tax and about £4 of that is tax on the tax I'm already paying. Makes me mad!  Wouldn't happen in the USA... y'all have guns

For an Imperial gallon it would be... US gallon is a bit smaller than the Imperial.

USG = 3.785 litres
Imp Gall. = 4.546 litres

Never did understand why in the land of bigger = better y'all chose a smaller gallon

My last fill (yesterday) at Costco in Boise, ID was 3.04 for 91octane. Elsewhere in town runs about 10-20cents per gallon more.

Speaking of gas, I tried DiscoMike's method of driving in 3 as opposed to D when under 45 MPH; my mileage has markedly improved. I don't have MPG stats yet, but I was getting about 150 miles at the half-way point; now I'm at 175, and not quite to half a tank yet.

We are sitting around $3.23 for 93 rating here in Austin. It was my understanding that Europe prices were much higher not only bc of their taxes but for a little higher octane than what we can get in the states. Is that correct?

We are upto $3.49 here in West MI. It sucks.
I have thought of adding a LPG system to my truck but it would take to long to recup my cost.
