Tires P vs LT ?

Elhoff -> Tires P vs LT ? (11/2/2007 11:46:16 AM)

I finally got some 16" wheels for my 99 Disco2 (anyone want some 18" Prolines?) so now I need to decide on tires.  I want to go with the 245/75R16 size that seems to be common for all-terrains on this forum (without lift).  Here is my issue:

I believe that my new Mirage wheels are 16 X 8".  Tires in this size are available from many manufacturers in both P245/75R16 and LT245/75R16.

- The P series tires are rated for 6.5" - 8.0" rims and are 109 load rated, but they are still P series tires designed for Passenger cars.

- The LT series tires are designed more for trucks, are 120/E/10ply load rated, but are only rated for 6.5 - 7.5" rims.

Which is the correct tire to be putting on our Disco2s?

My off-road use is more dirt road and fire road with occassional rocks protruding than it is "trails", but I also sometimes get along way into the back country (without a highlift) so really don't want to blow a sidewall.

Opinions?

For some reason the 245's seem to come out in 10 ply rated tires, a little heavy for my taste but a very good tire, especially the BFG AT's.

I ended up going with the LT245/75R16 tires. Interestingly, the tread width on the LTs is narrower than on the P series tires of the same size!  I went with the Toyo Open Country ATs, since my last set wore really well.  I like the new tires, they are really tough looking.  I think the ride is actually a bit rougher than I had with my 18" wheels, but I assume that this is because of hte stiff sidewalls on the 10 ply tires.  I was a bit surprised that the truck actually feels taller while driving, even though it is only up about 3/4".
