Starter isn't engaging enough to catch the flywheel, or you are missing teeth on the fly wheel.

Anyone worked on the starter at all?

I don't believe that anyone has touched the starter...

Is this something that is imperative?.. if so, how much would it cost?

I had a similar problem w/ my 03.  I did an engine flush with the Gunk enginge flush from Autozone ($3) and it hasn't happened since.

It's worth a shot.
