Bought a 2000 Disco from dealer off-lease so I'm 2nd owner. Cared for the car as one should but recently developed a strange sound of coolant flowing through the system. Private mechanic/UK car specialist researched and advised air was getting into cooling system from somewhere.Sounds like a tidal wave in my dashboard!  He thinks we're talking about an engine rebuild so I need a 2nd opinion. Since then I burst a hose so stopped driving the car.  Only has 96K miles but I don't know what to do with it. Anyone else hear of this problem or got some advice? MM

You need to have a mechanic do a coolant pressure test, you either have an internal or external coolant leak and this will find it quickly.
In the mean time, you need to bleed the syswtem of air or at least fill the coolant bottle to the very top and check it every morning while the engine is cold.

Thanks Mike. I did have the coolant pressure tested and the mechanic determined it is an internal leak. He believes the sleeves (?) have given way and air is getting past them. The pressure built up to the point that I burst a hose - hopefully that's all.  I'm not sure what to do next b/c it sounds like an expensive fix.  Mike M.

Hvae you checked to see if you have intermixed fluids/coolant in the oil?? If not go check, if there is no coolant in the oil, chance are you haven't dropped a sleeve, you just have a blown head gasket.
Get back to us.

Thanks Mike. I'll post again when I get to the car. Had to leave it on Long Island for now (I'm in Jersey). Appreciate the help so far - I'll be back in touch.  Mike M

Hi Mike - I finally got to see my 00 Disco again and confirmed that there is no evidence of coolant mixed with the oil.  I did burst the lower hose from the radiator to the engine, and coolant was seen leaking from the plastic reservoir (from what looks like a thin pressure release hose).  I had the head gasket replaced about a year ago at a cost of $1800 at a private repair shop.  Do you think it's a better idea to take it to the dealer for an official diagnosis?
Thanks as always for your help and guidance.  Mike M.

I would find a good local shop, the dealer just don't know how to trouble shot problems any more and just like to throw the book at you.

Any particular type of shop - general repair, engine specialists, cooling system specialists? What are you thoughts on national chains like Pep Boys, Firestone or Lee Myles for this kind of stuff?
