RE: 89 Classic Brakes - 2/2/2008 9:48:51 PM    WolfPack Posts: 498 Joined: 1/3/2008 Status: offline Overuse..as weird as that sounds.  Basically heat can make them warp.  Also if you have them 'turned' which basically means grinding the contact surface off.  A rotor can only be turned so many times before needing to be replaced.  Rotors last MUCH longer than pads, but eventually they too will need to be replaced. _____________________________ 2001 Range Rover 4.6 SE - Coil Sprung 2000 Chevy Blazer 4x4 4.3L V6 - The Beast (in reply to Classic89) Post #: 2

If a shop has recommended replacing the rotors it may be because they have warn down below their minimum thickness requirements. _____________________________ Mike Retired service manager. RE: 89 Classic Brakes - 2/4/2008 6:44:44 PM    Classic89   Posts: 50 Joined: 8/8/2007 Status: offline I am just asking because I took it to a shop to get the brakes looked at because I heard a grinding noise.  They told me I need all new rotors in the front and new brake pads, and then they said the back rotors have "pit rusted" is what they said. They said it would cost almost $700.00 to do it.  I have taken it there before and they have been wrong so I don't really trust the price or what they have said.  The only reason I took it there is because I was getting my oil changed there and there aren't any rover shops around close. I am just trying to see if I can just replace the brake pads because the rotors look fine. Any imput if helpful! (in reply to Classic89) Post #: 4

As for the rear, leave the rotors alone. Why don't you save yourself some money and do the brakes your self? _____________________________ Mike Retired service manager. I have looked at my replacement manual and it doesn't look to hard.  How much should it cost for me to do it on my own? (in reply to Disco Mike) Post #: 6
