I have a 98' Disco that had the same trouble. I replaced the ignition coils and all the wires. It still continued to sputter. A very good mechanic finally found that I had a cracked driveshaft speed sensor. I fixed that and everything is running great again. My Disco has 208,000 miles on it. Still going strong. Hope this helps. Gtlux

Replaced the old Autolite plugs with Bosch +4's today and ordered new wires, should be in tomorrow. Took it for a test drive and it seemed back to normal, even without the wires. Had to add power steering fluid, though, was making "that" sound when I drove it after replacing the plugs. And, my battery is still going dead when it sits overnight. I had Advance Auto Parts check the battery, is fine, and the alternator. It is only getting 45 peak amps. According to them, it's supposed to be 100 peak amps. Any ideas on where to get an alternator and how much? Thanks, ~S

Replaced the wires today. Also, found out my problem is probably NOT the alternator. Auto Zone guy thinks it's a combination of the battery going bad and a short in the wiring.

RTV blue or black silicone ($4 at Walmart) on the cap and coil (all wire connections). It helps as much as +4 plugs. no missing. I'll try the +4 plugs as well next time -- I used Champion Truck plugs and they did the trick for the money. I special ordered HD 8MM bosch wires at autozone for less than $50 (a few years back, granted) and they do very well too. I think it's a universal set 8MM with good sized boots and no crimping/cutting required.

For $4 I got a twist battery disconnect for the negative side. It loses all the radio codes and stations but it has helped resolve our drain problem when the rover sits. My son even left the lights on for 3 hours (park lamps) the other day and it started. Those slow drains are murder. Look on ebay for an alternator. Word to the wise -- I went through 3 (THREE) rebuilt starters before I got one that worked for the RRC. Actually I think that one was a new/discounted unit, so don't trust a rebuilt rover part as a rule. If you have air suspension I would not put a disconnect in place -- worth the $400 for the highend unit.

I think once that's fixed, I should be about good to go. I had the alternator checked at an AAP's and according to them, the alternator is fine. I hope it's JUST the short from the mechanic wiring the interior lights wrong. Air suspension? I didn't even know that was an option in the Disco. Mine doesn't have it, that I'm aware of...
