thin clear oil leak can't find source

Wifes Disco ll -> thin clear oil leak can't find source (3/4/2008 3:50:37 PM)

My wife's 2000 Disco ll has a dripping oil leak that is very thin and clear. It leaks worse when the engine is running but also leaks overnight. It appears similar to brake fluid or PS fluid, BUT it is not coming from PS pump/hoses or brake lines. It runs down where the bellhousing/trans mates with the engine on the driver's side and drips off the oil pan drain bolt. I can see it from below, but I can't find the source. From above I can trace the wetness up almost to the level of the head gasket but can't see or feel any farther up due to the engine/valve cover and firewall blocking my view. I see no hoses or anything that would carry this type of oil between the engine and firewall that could be a source of this leak. Is there some type of line or hose for the ACE, PS, or a brake line in this area? There is a brake line running across the firewall up high but it is not dripping and nothing is wet on the firewall in the area. I am stumped. I cleaned/degreased the whole area top and bottom and cannot see how this oil could be migrating from anywhere else. I see nothing squirting oil from another source to this area, but I suppose anything is possible. I was hoping someone familiar with these vehicles would have an idea what could be located in this area that could leak this type of oil. I called the dealer's service dept and they said they didn't have a clue. I'm not keen on having them dink around as much as I have looking for this.

thank you,

Eric

Get some on a piece of white paper towel, smell it, what doe it smell like, if it is clear, it can only be brake fluid, unless some replaced your p/s fluid with synthetic, which is clear.
Check your fluid levels, one of them has to be low. I wouldn't let her drive it till you find it, my money is on the brakes.

Eric,
Where did you go?? You asked a rather important question and have not replied back?

If it's a stick shift it could be clutch fluid - ignore if it's an auto.

Cheers,
