nevermind..i swore the sound was coming from the transfer case..but it is definately coming from the transmission. it sounds as if it is metal clinking loudly from the inside.

To make sure that it is not a exhaust use Sea-foam and look for the smoke.
The bolts on the Disco I's exhaust manifolds sometimes back out.

ive looked over the entire exhaust system. it is not the exhaust. it is definately coming from the tranny. the clinking/ticking sounds like it comes from a few places, but it is really only coming from the front end of the transmission (either the sump, or where it attaches to the motor). it happens in P, R,N,D,3,2, and 1. it is definately tied to RPMs. could this be

Well it sounds like you know that it is the transmission or something with the rear of the motor.

Pull the transmission to find what it is.
