How much should I expect to pay to replace a spun bearing. I have a mechanic i know and trust, that will show me every step of how to do everything myself the next time. Real good guy. My second question is; should I take it to a land rover specialist or this guy? or does it not really matter for something this simple/universal?

What are you going to do rebuild the motor or just replace one bearing? A motor replacement runs $7000 to $8000 USD. A rod bearing means that the crank needs to be turned and the rest of the bearings are not far from the same thing. If you just trying to fix it to sell it you may need to replace all the bearings,, that I would let your mechanic do he sounds like he can do it. With the fact that he will tell you how to do it I'm sure he will be fair on the price.

No idea, never replaced just one bearing. I assume you and he are going to do it in place, not tearing down the engine, so I wouldn't think it would be that much. Drop the oil pan, remove the conrod nuts, turn the crank, replace the bearing. Any good mechanic should be able to handle that. I wouldn't worry about taking it to a rover "specialist".

Doing a rod bearing can be quick or it can be the tip of the iceberg. If the crankshaft rod journal is scored and damaged, then the crank has to come out for machining or replacement. At that point, you're pulling the engine and putting a freshly overhauled one in from roverlandparts or craigslist. Dave

You could pick up a low mileage motor from http://roverlandparts.com/

I'm assuming it's ur 95 you're talking about, extremely easy to find used engines or parts for under $500 ..... you're a bit of distance away from me so If I found something for you shipping would be $300 or less (ranging from complete motor - crank and parts) pm me if you're interested ... i have some good and blown motors, i can tear apart for parts that you would need, if your crank ends up being cut pretty deep (depends on how long you drove it with the spun bearing)

It depends entirely on what you find when you get the oil pan and rod caps off. To have a looksee, I would expect a coupla hundred. If no crank damage, another coupla hundred to put it back together with a new bearing (plus parts). If the crank is shot, you're looking at a complete engine R&R plus the cost of the engine....probably 2K or more. Dave
