You don't list year and model ? But since you say it has a coil, it must be a disco I, classic or early ( pre 96') Defender. Am I correct ?

No spark, try this. Turn key on. Use a test light ( not a meter ) and check if both sides of the coil have power. Then have someone crank the engine whilst checking the same thing. One side of the coil you should see a faint pulsing of your test light. If you don't see the pulsing, 90 % of the time it is the ignition module that is bad. The newer type modules use a three pin weather pack style connector. The old type use a rubber push on two pin spade connector. If you have the newer type, chances are it is not bad. They are robust. Let us know. Good luck !

As has been said it is likely the Ignition module, in case you don't know it is on the side of the distributor.

If he has the old ones, could also be a problem with the wires/spade connections getting old. I had to snip mine and put new connectors on it. Check the coil first, as suggested. If you aren't getting power, check the wires and connectors.
