OVER SIZED PISTONS FOR DISCO 1

krizza91 -> OVER SIZED PISTONS FOR DISCO 1 (4/1/2008 12:37:55 PM)

I just had my engine rebuilt on my 98 discovery. The machine shop bored the cylinders, and are now having a difficult time finding oversized pistons. I asked about re-sleeving and they said it would be less expensive to simply get oversized pistons. This seems to be a more difficult task than they first believed. they have called a few places here in the US and are now trying places in England.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might be able to find oversized pistons?
I appreciate any advice or guidance tremendously.

Hrm...I feel like this is something they should have checked into before boring them.

I'm assuming you needed the boring, and thus your only other option than re-boring was a new block?

Your shop screwed you on this one.
Which engine do you have, a 3.9 or 4.0, how many .000 over did they bore it?

Are the liners removable in these engines?

I have the 4.0 and the liners can be "re-sleeved" for roughly $2,200 additional from my initial quote. They tell me the other option is to bore them .001 (a tenthousandth) and have oversized pistons custom manufactured. I don't know what to believe.

I know in the heavy duty diesel industry the piston sleeves (liners) are removeable. So I naturally assumed these engines liners were also removeable.

I had my motor rebuilt and evidently no one sells an oversized piston,I think your screwed

do you think it would be best to just pay the money to replace the liners, or would a better option be to find a used low mileage 4.6 and install that?

I think your shop needs to decide that.

Spoke with 2 different Rover shop owners over the last 2 day and they both said, that since the engine has been bored, it is just because the current sleeve will fail when reassembled.
Don't waste ant time and money on this engine, and make the shop foot a big portion of the bill for a replacement engine. The good news is, you can drop a 4.6 short block in and come out ahead.
