Hi Everyone, I've been lurking on the site for a while but finally registered as a member. I have a couple question's I 'd like some opinions on. I have a 2005 RR HSE with the 4.4L V8. It has 69k miles and is in excellent shape original condition but apparently has recently blown a head gasket on the right bank. The 2 center cylinders have app. 25psi. of compression. I'm wondering if anyone has ever done head gaskets on a 4.4L or just replaced the engine. I really don't want to get burried in this thing and may just sell it as is. All opinions are appreciated. Thanks, Don

IF IT IS THE HEAD GASKETS,ITS CHEAPER TO REPLACE THE HEADS VS REPLACING THE ENGINE.I WOULD GET A SECOND OPINION  ON IT THOUGH.

Before you do anything, you need to verify what is really wrong. Do a leak down tes on theose cylinders also do a chemical block test to confirm exhaust in the coolant system.
It is rare to see head gaskets blow on this engine, so keep looking till you know for sure what is going on.
Let us know.

Mike, a leak down test was done on those cylinders and pressure is definitely leaking back into the cooling system. What had happened is the upper hose seperated off the plastic portion that is held on the housing with the snap ring. I was not the one driving it (honest), but when this happened SHE kept driving to get to a safer area and overheated it. It definitely at least needs head gaskets. Do you know if there is any special tools needed for cam timing and where I might be able to get a service manual with some specs. on this engine. Thanks for your input,  Don

After talking to several people the last couple of days, I was told to NOT replace head gaskets. These engines are common for sleeves dropping in cylinders and hair line cracks in the block once they have been overheated. Do you feel their is any truth to this. If I'm going to fix this engine I don't want it to haunt me. Thanks again, Don

HEY mike, i recently had the leak down test  done on all cylinders and it came back fine.also, someone did a block test and it came back neg, saying that is combustion gases in the system.I was told that its possible that my water pump is not working. That's possibly the reason for the gauge going back and forth. Also, could it be something with the computer thats off, creating these weird issues.i have 71000 miles on the truck.everything has been replaced except the water pump! Please advise.

djones...stick to your thread on the matter.  You have been given many pieces of advice, go try them, and post back on your thread.  Do you have the 4.0/4.6 or do you have a 2003 MK III?  If you have the 4.0/4.6 then you have a completely different engine than this guy!

Is this what they call a "post hijack"?
