Hello All,

I am presently looking at a R/R SC, 2006 that is in excellent condition on the ext and int, with only 17K miles for a price about $10K lower than normal. It handles beautifully as well. However, I ran a carfax and it came back with the car being a buy back. I spoke to the dealership about it and they said that they have ran a 140 point inspection twice, and the car is in top form. The reason behind the buy back was, according to the dealer, the car being registered in CA where if a car is serviced for the same problem twice within one year, it is classified as a "lemon."

I'm not sure whether or not I should buy the car. The fact that is was a lemon scares me, but the price is attractive as well as the mileage. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

What's the price on it then?  If its still $40k plus, spend the 10k extra and get a good one.  Did they say what the problem was that got serviced twice?

They are pricing the car at $62K, with a 17K mileage. It's black with an ivory interior. The problem was apparently a "check engine" light that would not go off. What do you think?

I'd want at least another $10k off.  If they are going to tell you it's a lemon buyback, they're also going to tell you that when you take it back for service under warranty.  If they'll cover it just like any other new vehicle...maybe it might be a good buy!  That still seems a little high though for them to straight up tell you it's a buyback..

So, drzjoint, would you do the deal? Has anyone heard of a person buying a lemon for a discounted price, having the vehicle repaired by the dealer, then sold and never have a problem? That's what I would like to hear!

Personally, I'd resist the temptation and move on.  Unless you intend to keep the vehicle forever that CarFax report is going to pop up later and bite you, when you try to trade or sell it.  Like the others have said, maybe if they further reduce the price and certify it or give you some additional warranty it might be worth the gamble.  Seems too risky to me.

jazzcraig,
I think they're feeding you the typical sales pitch.  I owned a new Jeep in Southern California and we had 3 issues with it that were the same issue and there was no state law that required Chrysler to buy it back after 3 times.  We even looked into the lemon law and I believe it had to be 4 or more times but don't quote me.  Needless to say, the Jeep has had many more problems and we're still stuck w/ it.

The $62K price seems awfully high, especially for a buy back.  Is this a Super Charged Range Rover Sport (2006)?  I did an edmunds.com appraisal with your zip of 60611 along w/ the 17K miles and black color and it comes up just under $55K dealer price (certified used).  These trucks new in 2006 were $75K (RR Sports) so to only drop the price by $13K after 2 years and its Carfax tanrished with a lemon/buy back rating floors me.  Pass this one up man.  No offense but you would be a fool to buy this one.  Do your research and shop around before you shell out that kind of money.

I'm in Chicago now ...what dealership is this one at?  Lake Bluff?  Hinsdale?  Winnetka?

From Dallas so probably never saw any bad weather and $7K less than the one you're looking at.  This truck is hot.

i wouldnt let it scare you much. ive seen these cars bought back for a brake squeek, its not hard to get a car bought back. make sure you know why it was bought back, and get a complete service history. also the car will come with a extra warrenty due to it being a RAV. however there is a good chance you wont get much more off the price, that car was over 90 to start, high 50s will be your best deal by far, you can get that if you push.
