I bought a 96 Range Rover 4.0 that had the transmission removed and lost. It sat for two years and I bought it like this. I bought a used transmission from a salvage yard and my mechanic installed it. Everything fell right into place except there is one wire harness with a plug with about 6 connectors coming from the vehicle with nothing to plug into. The mechanic said that it may be a Neutral switch, but the ones I see online don't look like they would plug into my plug. He said that the missing electrical component (whatever it may be)is needed to give the computer information and without it, we can't fire it up. He admits he's not a Rover expert, but There's definitely a component missing. Any ideas what it may be? Any other tips for bringing this thing back to life after having been parked for so long? Thanks!

Hi Mike. I was assured that the year of the tranny was a 96 just like the vehicle. They went by VIN. I don't have the VIN on me right now. The mechanic that installed it said everything looks right on the money except for the missing item. He also said that the tranny has clean markings that might indicate that something that used to be mounted to it was removed.

That is why I was asking about the year of the tranny, cause in 99, Rover went to a electronic controled tranny, the D1's were all mechanical.
