I recently purchased my 04 Disco and have 61,000 miles. The first oil change returned with a small transfer case leak. Is this a normal outcome for Disco's around this mileage?

various leaks happen, but should be taken care of. Especially the transfer case. Do you know if the 60K serivce was done? It is a biggie, and if you just bought it, someone might have had it coming due and not wanted to pay for it.

Do a search for the 60K service on here. If you even the least bit mechanical, you can save yourself some money. If you run into any problems, just shout.

Is it a leak where it is dripping or just a wet spot, how low was the fluid level in the t/case?

the previous owner kept detailed records so I would say the 60,000 mile service was not completed. The transfer case barely registered low on fluid and the leak is a wet spot only. I'm no mechanic but I'm also no mr. Mom so I want to handle all my own repairs unless the wiser masses suggest it be handled by the professionals. Any advice will help.

With help/guidance, would you like to save alot of money and do the 60K your self.
If so get back to me. In the mean timeI hope he topped off the t/case, takes a total of 2.2 quarts.

Here i swhat you need to buy and do for the service.
This is the parts list for a 60,000 mile service or a high mileage used truck, the way I do it.
1 Oil filter, K&N 3001 or Mobil 1
1 Air filter
6 Qts of engine oil
12 Qts of ATF
7 Qts of 80/90W synthetic gear oil
1 Qt of synthetic Brake fluid
2 Qts of synthetic Power steering fluid
2 Gallons of OAT, orange coolant
1 Bottle of Lucas Power Steering additive
1 Bottle of Lucas Transmission additive
1 Can of Spray Carb. Spray
1 Can Of Brake cleaner
8 Spark Plugs, I use Bosch Platium Plus 4's
1 Set of Magnacor 8mm plug wires
1 Serpentine belt
2 Bottles of SeaFoam gas additive
1 T/Stat

60,000 Mile Service or Major Service for High Mileage Used Vehicle just purchased

Bleed the brakes
Flush and change the power steering fluid adding one bottle of additive
Service the tranny adding one bottle of additive
Change the coolant and t/stat
Do an engine flush before changing the oil
Do an induction cleaning
Clean the throttle body
Add fuel additive to full gas tank
Change both of the diffs fluid
Change the t/case oil
Replace the plugs and wires
Replace the air filter
Lube all the drive shaft grease fitting including the 2 slip shafts
Do full inspection of brakes, hoses, bushings etc.

Hopefully I didn't leave anything out.

I am interested in doing this upgrade myself but I will need a couple weekends to handle the list. The order you listed things I assume is the order they need to be done? He did top off the transfer case so I feel secure till the weekend. Is there an order of importance or just go for it?

i have a leaking transfer case too. common issue. you can pull it, throw some big $$ at it to repair the seals or you can just live with a small leak and keep an eye on it to see if gets worse--which is what i'm doing. just get it looked at every oil change and have them top it off to see how much its leaking. i also switched from the synthetic to 80/90 weight gear oil which seems to have slowed the leak down considerably (thanks discomike!)

I run synthetic now. Is 80/90 weight gear oil suggested and is there any potential issues I.e, heavy off roading or extended mileage trips?
